Giggs - The Education!

If you're a fan of underground music and keep your ear close to the scene - but haven’t heard about this guy yet, then quite simply you're late. Giggs aka 'Hollowman' from South East London (Peckham to be precise) has rapidly become known as one of the UK's most sought after Hip Hop acts...

Who Is It?: BOK BOK

Bok Bok & Manara are two people from Camberwell (South East London) who love everything to do with "bass, drum and treble" - as D Double E from Newham Generals nicely puts it.

This week we catch up with one half of the duo - Bok Bok - to talk bass, bass and... Come Grime With Me?

JP: Who are you?

BOK BOK: I'm Bok Bok, a DJ, producer and promoter from South East London. I make and play bass-heavy club music, including grime, house & garage, and run the Night Slugs club night with my good friend L-Vis 1990.

iRate...(Xclusive!)

This is the new video from Meleka for the ladies funky anthem produced by Crazy Cousins, Go. I'm liking the concept on this one, I like the kill of killy at the end, I had to laugh out loud when I saw that. This tune has been doing the rounds in the clubs for sometime now, lets see how it translates into chart success when it's released in September. (Meleka is a pretty one don't you think?)

Hello My Name Is: Mz.Bratt!

Who On Earth Does This Bratt Think She Is?

WHO: Cleopatra Humphrey, 17-year-old grime princess from Hainault, East London

SOUNDS LIKE: Grime-y electro splender with a feminine touch.

Since finding her musical feet at the age of 14, it was no wonder Mz.Bratt would end up becoming an MC, seeing as her dad was MC Scallywag from 80’s acid-house group, Spiral Tribe. If that couldn’t be used as a claim to fame, Bratt was also featured on the popular T4 reality TV programme ‘Musicool’, Which was a show aimed at making a West End production with a cast of singers and musicians from genres unassociated with musical theatre. Bratt excelled in the show, so much so was chosen to star as the leading lady in the production which was aired live, at one point in the programme Mz.Bratt reduced popstar Jamelia (who was a judge on the show) to tears as she thought Mz.Bratt was so great at it. Following from the success of that programme Mz.Bratt was singed up to go on tour with The Count and Sinden, including dates at Bestival and Glastonbury.

With all of that under her belt, it was only when Mz.Bratt made a female reply to Wiley’s ‘Wearing My Rolex’ that she was really put on the map. “It's funny because myself and Terror Danjah (who produced the new single) were making electro before Wiley dropped Rolex; we made a song called 'Bad Hair Day' which was played on radio stations such as KISS FM and BBC1Xtra. The track actually had some label interest but then Wiley’s song got signed instead, so he asked me to feature on the girl’s response of Rolex’’, she explains. It was going to be sooner or later that Mz.Bratt would go on to get the well deserved label attention that Wiley ‘stole’ from her. “My new single ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ was getting a lot of support on radio before hand. DJ's such as Pete Tong and Westwood had played it and the A&R really liked and believed in the track, he put my track forward and AATW really loved it. They are really supportive and I have a great team behind me’’, say’s Mz.Bratt. This Bratt will no doubt be hitting up the charts very soon with her sweet and innocent sounding rhymes, but she promises not to be spoilt when she hits the big time!

Mz.Bratt’s 3 Overly Used Slang Words:

Scrut – “I use this slang word because it’s a better way of being mean and not swearing, so it’s like 'just scrut'.”

Boomy – “If someone is scared of someone or something, I just say ‘your Boomy’.”

Booky – “If someone is acting a bit shifty or dodgy, the only way I can describe them is as they are Booky and I love it cos’ they won’t know what I mean!”

Q&A: Fashion Legend Jean-Charles de Castelbajac

When we last spoke to madcap French designer Jean-Charles Castelbajac in the summer of 2006 he was just getting his feet wet in US waters, relaunching his eponymous line and talking vintage Castelbajac teddybear suits and TV on the Radio. Fast-forward about six seasons and the French designer is ramping up for the launch of a brand new label, JCDC—the nickname given to him by his grime buddies. UK-based journalist Joseph Patterson caught up with Castelbajac to get the scoop on the new line (apparently Ebony Bones will perform at the debut show at London Fashion Week). Just came across this on Street Writer and I am overly feeling this remix stillos. The original Migraine Skank needs a new lease of life, because it's getting a lilly bit rinsed out now and this one works for me. Sounds a bit mad, but it works.

Facebook Hate Groups (Mixmag)

If you are a Facebook fein then you would have come across the hundreds and hundreds of love and hate groups surrounding dance music, some funnier more than others. We have selected the top 10 most interesting Facebook groups that might make you want to search and click, 'join group'.

NO MORE NURSERY GRIMES!!! KEEP IT HOUSE >> KEEP IT FUNKY!!!
There has been an influx of hate groups on the emerging scene between grime and funky house and this Facebook group caught our eye on merely the name alone. The creator of the group told us, ''I love funky but would hate to see this music turn the same way garage did back in the day. We like to party, not to hear MCs literally roaring over tracks. Now with these younger people trying to release so called 'Nursery Grimes' on funky, especially after having K.I.G's Head / Shoulders, Migraine Skank & Tribal Skank what more do you need, this isn't a craze, this is House music.''

Say No To Wonky & Yes To Real House Music
Yet another homage to funky house, this group is all about real house music (hence the name) including deep, soulful and funky house music and saying no to the more garage type sounding house music that is being played in raves these days. Back in 2004/5 funky basically took over the then old skool garage scene and the music that was labelled "funky house" started to sound less like conventional disco, funky house and became deeper and more broken, it was this that attracted the attention of the old skool garage crowd. Big, groundbreaking tracks such as:

Fish Go Deep- The Cure and The Cause (Dennis Ferrer)
Quentin Harris- My Joy and Travelling
Hardsoul- Self Religion (you got to believe)
Jazztronik- Samurai
DJ Gregory- Don't Panic
Shaun Escoffrey- Days Like this

Dubstep is NOT party music!
Dubstep music has had a hard time recently with many people saying it's not music you can dance to, unless your off your face with a can of fosters in hand. The creator of the group told us, ''I love drum and bass, that's the scene I party with. I love the music, the darker, faster style of electronic music. Now as of lately it seems that every DnB DJ and others have switched over to this "new" style aka dubstep, a much slower pace style of music. I didn't hate dubstep when I first started on the scene, but it has now taken over the club nights and the bigger parties. At midnight to 1.00am when there should be some rowdy energetic music playing, there's dubstep. It's slow, it's boring, and I’m sick and tired of it.''

I Love UK Music, But Grime Mc's Can Suck Donkey Balls...
Now we love grime music, but not as much as some people it seems, this group gives MCs a good telling off. ''This group is for everybody who is sick of grime MCs ruining good music. They have almost completely ruined bassline for me. PLEASE I BEG you, do not do it to funky as well, it's all we have left.''

GRIME & GARAGE IS NOT DEAD THERE IS JUST NO F**KIN SURRPORTERS
We don't think grime or garage is dead by a long shot, but it could do with some more people like this. ''This group was set up for the true grime and garage fans out there, because it seems as if there are people who like the music, but just don't buy and support it, that's why it hasn't gone where we expected it to by now.''

Educating Northerners to like good music. I.E NOT INDIE!
This group is about the up north scene not having any form of underground music and seems to be surrounded by awful indie music. ''I’ve had enough with indie and living in Manchester where there is no other music other than indie and wasteman RnB, its time to revolutionise. There is no (notable) Urban music scene, no grime, UK hip-hop, garage, 4x4, sublow, or even dubstep for flip sake.''

Bassline can take any good song and make it shit....and I hate it
Bassline has made many a dent in the charts over the past 2 years since it's popular rise via up north club land, but more south of the border, it seems as if there aren't that many lovers of the sound as we have come to find out.''Because I just heard a niched up version of Red Hot Chilli Peppers - 'By the way' coming out of my sisters chav infested bedroom. Bassline is bullshit.''

UPDATE: bassline is still bullshit

UPDATE 27/3/08: Yes people, bassline is still bullshit

UPDATE 28/3/08: Who is Jamie Jowitt with his I like baseline shit!!!!!! No Jamie Jowitt we are very sorry but were afraid BASSLINE IS STILL BULLSHIT

I HATE CHEESY EURODANCE DANCE MUSIC WITH A PASSION!
Euro dance is not to everyone’s taste, Eurovision viewers may enjoy it, but the creator of this Facebook group detests it with a passion. ''ALL FUCKING EURODANCE PRODUCERS SHOULD BE SHOT, this group is for people with real music taste.''

Anyone who hates music like:

Scooter
Basshunter
Cascada
Groove Coverage
Special D
DJ Alligator
XTM

too much fidget house!
With almost every trendy club night in London paying homage to the sound they call 'fidget house', it was surprising to find this massive group of 49 members who also dislike the fidgeting. ''For anyone who believes that the fidget hype has lasted long enough. For anyone who thinks that not every song needs a fidget remix, those "fidgeteers" remix everything, even backstreet boys shit. For anyone who finds fidget house irritating. For anyone who thinks that it sounds like the CD is broken.''

I LOVE dance music but I hate chaves
The most hilarious group we came across was this one, with 3 members all in the same mind frame, surely they must be doing something right. ''You don't have 2 be a chav 2 like dance music.'' Here, here we say...

So Magic and Tempa T sent me the vocal of Next Hype and I decided to get some remixes done on it, DS1 from Sheffield done a lot and did some big funky mash up and he also did a bassline version which is also doing plenty of stuff. People seem to be liking this one, I sent it to a few DJs and on Saturday night I randomly went to Milton Keynes and heard this getting played, fully 'dunned da dance' as Tempz would say. Goes to show how much the internet is a great marketing tool init. Watch out for DJ Q's bassline remix, all I can say is WOW!

ILL MURK: Ill Murk is predominantly a grime and hip hop artist/producer, but I’m also a deep engineer so if the youts out there want their tracks to bang like mine then holla at me and we will talk business (laughs). I like to be schizophrenic with the music. Take any three songs of mine and you won’t find the same thing; one will make you laugh, one will be a story from the roads and the third will be on some political tip exposing the government and their tactics to oppress my people... but that’s a another story (laughs)...

I'm not, nor have I ever been a massive fan of Trim, but this freestyle has definitely changed my perspective of him. It might sound a bit silly, but with his old stuff I couldn't listen to it for too long because the way he spits is quite dreary, one of them ''LOOK INTO MY EYES'' type flows as I like to call them. I must say I am impressed with this comeback seeing as he has been away from the scene for a little while, spit more like this Trim and I will welcome you back with open arms (soverymuchnohomo).

This Is What Happens To Set Up Chicks!

I'm no BBC news correspondent or owt, but I have to say my piece on this. What this 16 year old girl did to her young boyfriend was very wicked and to be honest I'm shocked that such young people could be so bad mind. I know some fucked up ghetto girls that would do alot of stuff to some man dem, but never, ever to this extent and I'm glad they all got sent down. But look how many lives are now over, it's not just Shakilus Townsend who's life they destroyed, they're own lives are now basically over also, which is a terrible shame. SET UP GYAL TAKE NOTE!

Fabric: Introduce Yourself - Mz.Bratt!

Check it out: HERE

Ikonika Q&A!

Name: IKONIKA

Genre: Dubstep

Location: London

Known For: ‘Please’

SUPERSUPER: When did you realise you had a talent for producing music?

IKONIKA: I started listening to Hip-Hop when I was younger. I think around 1993/4. I found myself really into the beat. I was never really listening to the lyrics; I was more fascinated about where the beat came from and how it was made. I guess from there is when I realized I wanted to get involved…

SS: Why did you choose to make dubstep?

I: I started learning the drums a couple of years later. I played in a few metal and hardcore bands. I was really into it. Then around 2005 I decided to go back to Hip-Hop and try making some beats. I’d got a copy of FL4 and was trying stuff out really. It wasn’t until I found out that Skream was making his stuff on the FL too is when I tried to emulate some dubstep.

SS: What’s your thought on the current state of the dubstep scene?

I:
I actually think it’s really exciting. So many people are coming with their own sound and are starting to get a lot of recognition. I’m talking about people like Joker, Guido, Darkstar, Madd, Zomby, Brackles and Greena. These people just make me want to step my game up real bad and I’m really happy to be friends with them.

SS: To me dubstep seems like a very male dominated scene, a bit like the grime scene, how does it differ for being a female in such a scene?

I: I don’t really like this question because compared to say the metal scene; dubstep is a little teddy bear. I’ve never really seen it as male dominated, because everything in life is pretty much male dominated. As a woman you just learn to deal with it. I don’t really notice it. Most of my heroes are male but they’d still be my heroes if they were female. I dunno, I hate these sexism questions because it doesn’t effect me, I don’t think about it when I’m making tunes.

SS: Where do you get your inspirations from because your sound is very different to the normal dubstep sound?

I: I think it’s because I’d listened to so many different genres of music when I was growing up. I went through so many different phases as a teenager, it was all a bit confusing trying to ‘fit-in’ because people could never categorize me and I guess it’s kind of similar with my music. I’m a Gemini so there’s always going to be a weird balance with me. I have many personalities and I absolutely love a bit of contrast. I describe my style as, synth and bass, future and past, electronic emotions, quarter stepping, scared and not scared…

Just came across this on the grimeforum and it is actually ALOT. South London's Killa P is one of the more, shall we say capable MCs out there when it comes to yardie flows, he isn't too bad on a bit of dubsteppery either. This is real grime though, none of that poppy lovey duvvy shit (not saying that's always bad) but every now and then you need some realness in ya lifeeee! The video is not the best and we can clearly see that, but it's a 'hood' one so whatever (although I think he should have hollered SB.TV or Timoothy & Bazmondo for a better one). Minor, it's still sufficient for the eardrum though...

He has a mixtape out now which he is selling for 99p, cleverly titled - Credit Crunch Part 1 and it features 16 tracks of pure gully riddin grime, featuring Roadside G's and more.

NUR is headed by Leon 'DJ Ace' Lava & Swifta Beater. Having started in late 2007 as all members had a common intrest - music. We said we wanted to become the So Solid crew of bassline, but were over shadowed by other crews that were more organised, we found a lot of our singers were poached and the members did include AdotR and Moky from Creepers but both have pursued their indiviual goals. At present the remaining SKully 2 Gully, Dj Shystie, Jerome Tha Singer.

New Editions include grime based producer Captain Scarlet & Marky B an up and coming funky house DJ for 2009, it was a joint decision by the heads to re launch the brand focusing on bassline, grime and funky house. We are also experimenting with funky/bassline and the electro/bassline crossing the two genres and seeing what we can bring to the industy that is new and original.

There are plans for vinyl and digital releases over the coming months and there are residencies held on the radio stations across the 2nd city.
