Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
21 year old Will Kay is currently one of the uk's biggest underground art and design artists to touch the world of grime, i had to know what this hype ting is about so i had a chat with him to find out.

Will Kay so where are you from?
east london

How was it growing up in east?
in east london, its all changing up. nice area to live in

So how was the school life?
school life in east was all about choices, you had to be your won leader or else you would end up lost in the system,i ended up doin my own thing throughout my years in school

So when did you decide that you had a talent for art?
in primary, i was fully in to sports main track and field,
i won my 1st art competition at the age of 14,thats when i thought i should get into art more...from then on i drew when i had time.

Ok so you thought arts suited you best ?
well...erm at the time i thought bout the future, like athletics u either work hard or done drugs to get to the top,but in art its hard work but u can do better even if ur at a older age

Being in east was there alot of arsty things to do places to go like at youth clubs etc?
erm at the time i didnt really know bout art even untill i woz at college
i just got around by word of mouth really

Right lets talk music now lol what music did you listen to growing up?lol..music...it was mainly rnb...hiphop for me uno ,but years passed i discovered all the different genres

So when did you discover the world of grime? at what age...
eerm....hmmm,grime at the age of 18 i think...them days wiley, dizze kano were all normal not propa known yet.

What was it that attracted you from rnb and hip hop to the dark world of grime?
its was the whole theme of uk,its new and its from here, not any american thing that sumone made up...and also its the beats that catch my attention, sumtimes in my art i focus on beats and the sum of the mc's ryhmes

Did you ever want to be a Mic Man?
lol mc'ing erm not really rapper yea,i shouldve been one..big up mobb'd out tho, mobbd out is group of grime mc's and rappers from east london.

So when did you decide to merge art and music together?
ye ye..i mean when im workin,i do listen to music, there are alot music influences in my art,i do listen to all kinda genres, coldplay, bloc party also influence my art work.

Some people might not know some of the stuff you have worked on can you name a few mixtape designs you have done?
erm...newest ones ,No.lay comparisions,Lightnin-young&gifted,Spitter-my name is spitter,DVA presents voice of grime vol.1...most of the other are still pending lol

The grime poster i think is the piece of art that everyone recognises you from how do you feel about that?
ohhh at the moment,ye i mean ,its part of grime history,im not ashamed of the scene, its still growing so its kool.

Before you did the poster with all the featured artists on there you did seperate ones which one did u get the most love from?
lol, good question well i had the idea first then i had a conversation with Wiley who thought it would be a good thing to do,some of the artist didnt really care bout featuring onit, then again there not even that known it was like a promotion tool for them aswell...so thank god all the know names wanted to be on it.

There have been some good outlets for you at events such as Mindie and Dirty canvas how was that for you like?
Oh ye ye, they did come in handy at the time,to try and promote and sell the Grime poster...

How did you come across them?
Oh dirty canvas, DVA introduced me to dj magic, and the mindie event was a contact through myspace with the ladies!

Where do you see yourself in the art and design industry are u studying at uni?
still at uni,bit busy with that right now...in few years time,i wanna be running my clothing line ODD KINGDOM and,art exhibitions and more....the futures bright!

Where can people catch you doing some live work etc?
live art, thats an area i need to get in to,at the moment,no shows goin on..i will have exhibitions, canvas art work collaborations with photographers coming soon so keep watchin the myspace.

Niche Report.

The UK cant have no underground music scene without boydem locking things off as you will see from the bbc report above which was aired on bbc1,ravers just make sure the Niche scene doesnt go down that road what grime did because there will be no more dances, grime is now getting a chance as it has a few commercial artists and some well organised club nights like Dirty Canvas, Sidewinder etc out there which doesnt make it so bad but the genre did suffer a while back so try keep Bassline alive by not bringing out the leng's and shanks in the rave.

Its A Album Not A Mixtape.

Out today in all your good local record shops or you can still buy online @ http://www.7digital.com/artists/skepta/greatest-hits/

Dj Total Interview

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Dj Total is one of the biggest Niche Bassline Dj's out there in one of the genre's main cities Leicester (Big up the Le2 Block). So i took some time to interview him on this new big sound taking over the Midlands and up North.

What was the first tune you ever purchased
First tune i ever bought was shy fx - funkindemup in 1996

What was the first tune that got you into garage?
Rosie gaines - closer than close,i loved that tune...stush days lol

When did you start djing?
erm....I started djin about 13 doin mainly bedroom sets n couple radio shows back in the jungle days. When I was 15 got into garage, thats when I started getting alot of bookings round the midlands and my career really started to take off.

So starting young as you said 15 did you find it hard for people to take you seriously?
Not really tru say i was 15 when i started on garage my first bookings were hysteria and gossip, n them days there that was a big look, so my name grew instantly jus by playin there, then obviously more n more bookings started 2 come

Ok so being a part of midlands mafia one of the biggest grime crews from the midlands how did the grime thing go for you?
Yea as u kno i got alot of love from that, on a whole different scale, but obviously previous to mafia i had done alot of things anyway so it all helped to make mafia what it is today everyone cud look on it on a business level aswell not just doin sets

So when did you first start to hear about Niche/4x4 bassline?
Shit i am crap with times lol...it wudda been about 4 years ago i think
when that ja rule and ashanti 4x4 remix was gettin played in sheffield at club niche n from there i kept hearing more n more about 'niche'

So what is it about niche bassline that you like and why do you think its so big at the moment?
What i like is that to a point it reminds of how garage used to be back in the day, nice bubbly tunes that r well produced and are fun to mix, obviously I still like grime but i feel that its more about the mcs as artists now, making mixtapes & videos etc...i cud easily one drop tunes thru a whole set and still murk it n to me that aint djin.I reckon its big cos like with old skool the tunes create energy for people to dance to which grime is lackin at the minute, only a few people doin em.

I hear that still grime is changing though give it time lol...but on a level why do you get all them exclusive banger's what's your appeal to those producers?
Lol u tell me, all I can put it down to is the fact ave been around from years n put in ALOT of work n most of them know that, obviously I dont get tunes off everyone but am nice with what I got. Big up those supporting dj total u know who you are lol.

Why Do People Forget Where Their Roots Are.???

Ok now this is a subject that has been bugging me for time, Niche Bassline is currently doing alot at the moment which i am fully greatfull for because i promote the sound myself , the thing is there are alot of Original GRIME mc's and producers that have 100% jumped on the NICHE bandwagon which i dont rate. Like i dont mind people experimenting but to totally disregard Grime and say ''ahh grime is deadout blooood''is not real because if there was no grime they wouldnt be in the place they are, but i respect people like Mr.V and j-star and a few others who still rep grime because they know grime is still alive. But also big up all the niche raver's out there aswell its all love.

Dubplate Drama Review.

The return of the what i would call the ''UNDERGROUND SOAP '' returned Thursday 20th @ 12.40pm with new time of 30 minutes instead of 20 which was good. I think the show was alot, with the likes of Ghetto,J2K,JME,Newham Generals,Marcie Phonix & Hyper fenn all gracing the mic. What i also rate is that on the drama no one petts to chat their real barz if its road barz or not which was good so no faking for the camera.
But the best acting performance apart from the Main girl SHYSTIE has to go to MIKE GLC who is a showaaaa actor but the greeze was still there so it was all big.
I have to give it a 9/10 due to one actor on there his acting wasnt up to standard l but overall its a good look for the scence.
